President Felipe Calderón's role in office is changing from national leader to that of party leader. He has a little over a year left in office in which Mexico enters a prolonged election season which will culminate in next year's general elections. With no prospect of being re-elected Mexican presidents can become lame ducks, slowly losing their influence on the national stage. To remain relevant they tend to become more visibly involved in day-to-day party politics. In the case of Calderón, whose national leadership has been questioned throughout his term, it seems this has come sooner than expected.
