NICARAGUA: Ortega's pledges bear fruit

President Daniel Ortega has received fulsome praise from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for his food security and poverty reduction efforts. While the isthmus continues to struggle amid soaring food prices, this endorsement is important for Ortega, who has made the issue a key priority of his Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government. Sceptics, however, raise familiar concerns regarding the lack of transparency surrounding these efforts and electoral motives ahead of November's general election, as well as pointing to his ultimate failure to tackle the structural causes of the problem.
