CHILE : Piñera's popularity implodes

Volcán Puyehue exploded on 4 June, belching plumes of ash some 10km into the sky. The massive eruption of Puyehue, located in the southern region of Los Lagos, helped obscure from view the publication, two days earlier, of an opinion poll showing the popularity of President Sebastián Piñera sink to a new low of 36% in May. Piñera is being punished for his government's impending approval of an unpopular and controversial mega hydroelectric dam project, HidroAysén, further south, in Chilean Patagonia.
