MEXICO: Avila splits PRD, but at what cost?

A senator for the Distrito Federal, René Arce, and his brother, Víctor Hugo Círigo, a deputy from the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) this week announced their defection to join the campaign of Eruviel Ávila, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) candidate for the governorship of the Estado de México. The defections show the factional pressure still simmering inside the PRD: Arce had resigned from the PRD 18 months ago but had been close to the dominant Nueva Izquierda faction in the party. The defections also hint at a surprising lack of confidence in the Avila campaign which, the opinion polls show, is leading by a crushing (30 percentage point margin) in the 3 July elections.
