ECUADOR | Safe pair of hands. President Rafael Correa has appointed the former goalkeeper José Francisco Cevallos, nicknamed "the hands of Ecuador", as his new sports minister, one day after the 40-year old Liga de Quito player retired from football on 22 May. Cevallos, who played in the World Cup in 2002, said it would be "an honour" to represent his country. From Correa's point of view his appointment looks like a populist gesture in the immediate wake of his referendum proposal squeaking home after meeting stronger-than-expected resistance.
Correa said he was aware that critics would accuse him of squandering an opportunity to seek consensus with opposition groups after the narrow victory in the referendum but argued that radical change did not allow for this. He also contended that "de facto forces" that had ruled the country in the past would not have extended the same courtesy to him in the same position.
