Development: On 2 August Alejandro Maldonado, the president of the constitutional court (CC), said that the court would not be intimidated by supporters of former First Lady Sandra Torres seeking to overturn the court’s decision disqualifying her candidacy ahead of the 11 September presidential vote. The same day, a “high risk” court (so called because of the threat the accused pose to judges and witnesses) sentenced four special forces soldiers to 6,060 years in prison. This was the first conviction for a massacre perpetrated during the 1960-1996 civil war.
