Humala quietly sets about his task; makes first breakthrough

Peru will become “a powder keg” if President Ollanta Humala fails to get to the root of social discontent, and restore the 1979 constitution. This assessment came from Humala’s own brother, Antauro, who added that he expected to be released from prison, where he is serving time for an armed revolt in 2005, by January. It is scarcely any wonder that Humala has kept a studied silence during his first few weeks in power, the subject of much debate in the national media. Humala broke his silence in an interview on 14 August during which he said Peruvians wanted a president that “does more and talks less”. Just two days later government and mining sources revealed that a deal had been struck over revised mining royalties. Details are yet to emerge but it would be a significant early achievement for Humala.
