Coca eradication resumed on 23 August in the Alto Huallaga, just one week after the interior minister, Oscar Valdés, announced its suspension in order for the new government to redesign Peru’s counter-narcotics policies. The short duration of the “pause” in eradication suggests it was all about gesture politics: one week is insufficient to achieve anything of any substance, let alone completely overhaul a longstanding anti-drug programme.
