Alonso Lujambio, the education minister, announced this week that he would not stand for the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN)’s presidential nomination for 2012. Somewhat surprisingly, he did not endorse any of his four remaining rivals. This omission was interpreted by other politicians as hostility to the supposed (but undeclared) frontrunner for the nomination, Ernesto Cordero, the finance minister. According to the opinion polls, the only recognisable PAN presidential candidates are Santiago Creel, whom President Felipe Calderón defeated for the nomination in 2005, and Josefina Vázquez Mota, currently the leader of the PAN in the chamber of deputies but previously minister of education and Calderón’s campaign chief in 2006.
