President Sebastián Piñera will meet key players behind the student protests on 3 September. Piñera is clearly calculating that if he can just resolve the student protests his government will be able to regain the initiative. He has been encouraged by the low turnout on 25 and 26 August for the general strike, which attracted no more support than student marches over the last three months. He is also seeking to isolate the students by making his government out to be scrupulously reasonable: in addition to agreeing to meet the students, Piñera has taken a firm stance against the militarised police, Carabineros, for the death of a 16-year old during the strike.
