HAITI | Unpol reacts to upsurge in crime. After a series of homicides and kidnappings, some of which ended in the death of the victims, the Unpol component of Minustah launched in late June a roundup of suspected criminals. On 7 July, Unpol Spokesman Raymond Lamarre announced that 203 people had been arrested, among whom were 13 women and 11 minors. He said, though, that the security situation was ‘stable’. Frantz Lerebours, spokesman for the national police, said he could not rule out a resurgence of insecurity, which he described as a continuing challenge.
