VENEZUELA: On your marks…

Since the Venezuelan republic was founded in 1958, the presidential election has traditionally been held on the first Sunday of December. This week, Venezuela’s national electoral council (CNE) broke the mould and scheduled the 2012 presidential elections two months earlier, on Sunday 7 October.  The opposition, as ever, spied in the move an effort to benefit President Hugo Chávez, who despite his battle with cancer is also bidding to break the mould by extending his tenure to 18 years.
