This autumn promises to be fascinating. The frontrunner for the presidency in 2012, Enrique Peña Nieto will hand over power in the Estado de México to his successor on 15 September. Until Peña Nieto becomes the official presidential candidate for the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), he is vulnerable to dirty tricks aimed at knocking him out of the race. The attempts could come from an internal PRI rival, but more likely from President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa who has allowed personal and political feuds to motivate at least some of his actions. This autumn will also see one important gubernatorial election, in Michoacán on 13 November, and the usual pre-election posturing in congress, which starts its key session of the year on 1 September.
