On 5 September the government of President Rafael Correa issued a decree (872) allowing it to keep the judicial system running while simultaneously reforming it. Ecuadoreans gave their approval for such a reform in the 7 May referendum, even though Correa’s opponents claimed then (and some still claim now) that he is aiming to politicise the legal system [RA-11-05]. In the same referendum, voters approved a bizarre list of other government actions, from the outlawing of casinos and spectacles that involved the death of an animal (so including cock- and bull-fighting) to an end to cross-shareholdings between media companies and banks.
