The ruling alliance, struck between President Ricardo Martinelli’s Cambio Democrático (CD) and Vice-President Juan Carlos Varela’s Partido Panameñista (PP), has officially ended. Martinelli’s dismissal of Varela from the post of foreign minister on 30 August, triggering the resignations of other PP cabinet members in solidarity, led Varela to pronounce the alliance over. He also declared that, despite being part of the executive (he retains the vice-presidency, having been elected to the position in the 2009 vote) he will now play the role of “leader of the opposition”.
