DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Education becomes an issue

On 2 October thousands of teachers and students demonstrated in Santo Domingo in favour of higher government spending on education. Many of the demonstrators had shaven heads, clearly aligning themselves with President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela who has lost his hair in his battle against cancer. The demonstrators are calling for a minimum of 4% of GDP to be spent on education. As the country is in a pre-election period (there are presidential elections next May), the launch of an education improvement movement could have an effect on the elections.
