HAITI: Fiddling while Rome burns

President Michel Martelly is denouncing a legislative dictatorship. Deputies are accusing Martelly of seeking to introduce an executive dictatorship. If ever the Haitian people needed the country’s politicians to work together consensually now is the time. The ravages of the devastating earthquake of January 2010 are still visible for all to see and yet essential reconstruction, and most importantly the re-housing of thousands of displaced people, living in tent cities, has not been accomplished. The inauguration of Martelly, on 14 May, offered some hope of progress but the first three months of his mandate have been marked by squabbling with congress, leaving him without a prime minister or a cabinet. That standoff is now turning ugly.
