GUATEMALA: An unilluminating debate

A “grotesque spectacle” was how one political commentator dubbed the long-awaited TV debate between former General Otto Pérez Molina and populist businessman, Manuel Baldizón, who are contesting the presidential run-off on 6 November. The exchange degenerated into mudslinging and mutual accusations, once again underlining the dearth of ideological debate in the election. The two men, however, avoided mention of the more serious concerns flagged up by different sectors in relation to each other.
