VENEZUELA: López can run for office but could he hold it?

Leopoldo López is eligible to run in presidential elections in October 2012. That much is clear from a legal ruling by Venezuela’s supreme tribunal of justice (TSJ) this week which otherwise appears to defy common sense. The TSJ decided that a ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) last month ordering Venezuela to lift the bar on López running for public office was “unenforceable”. He can run, it argued, but if he were to win it is unclear whether he would be able to take office.
