GUATEMALA: Raining on Baldizón’s parade

Polls are pointing to a victory for former general Otto Pérez Molina of the right-wing Partido Patriota (PP) in the 6 November presidential run-off with populist businessman Manuel Baldizón (Libertad Democrática Renovada, Líder) (see sidebar). With the campaigning period again notable for the absence of substantive policy discussion – the lone presidential TV debate was dubbed a “grotesque spectacle” by local commentators while Baldizón’s multi-party alliance [RC-11-10] suggests the lack of ideology underpinning the different parties - a crucial factor in determining the outcome of the election could ultimately be the weather: heavy rains, which have ravaged the country will likely impact the rural vote, Baldizón’s targeted support base.
