Weekly Report - 27 October 2011 (WR-11-43)

MEXICO | Car bomb. On 20 October a car bomb exploded in the industrial city of Monterrey, in northern Mexico. The target was a military convoy, which was pursuing suspected drug traffickers. Drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) have made limited use of car bombs as a tactic to date and this is the first time they specifically targeted the armed forces with this type of attack. Other recent car bomb attacks were aimed at either the police or the media. Authorities claim it was an ambush by DTOs, which used the pursued car as bait, with the purpose of leading the convoy to the car bomb location. The attack caused damage to property, but no deaths or injuries. The armed forces and state authorities are conducting investigations to determine the identity of the perpetrators, but they have yet to make any arrests.
