Ebrard makes some moves

The main leftwing party, the Partido de la Revolución Democrático (PRD), is showing the strain of harbouring two strong candidates for the presidency in 2012. The competition between the candidates, Marcelo Ebrard, the mayor of Mexico City, and Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a radical who claims that he was cheated of the presidency in 2006, is coming to the crunch. After an abortive attempt to hold internal party elections on 23 October, Ebrard claims that the party has now resolved to decide between himself and López Obrador over the first weekend of November.
