GUATEMALA | Homicide rate falling. On 28 September, President Alvaro Colom predicted that the number of homicides in Guatemala would fall this year for the second year running, possibly by as much as 6% to 6.5%. He made reference to data from the Procuraduría de Derechos Humanos (PDH, the office of the human rights ombudsman), which showed that in 2010 the number of homicides had fallen by 7.8% to 5,960 (from a peak figure of 6,498 in 2009).
