DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: First lady will run for second position
First Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández will be the running mate for Danilo Medina on the ticket of the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) in next May’s presidential elections. Early opinion polls suggest that this “dream ticket” will be unstoppable. In part this is because the opposition Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) is fielding former president Hipólito Mejía (2000-2004) as its candidate: Mejía presided over an economic collapse and hyperinflation. But it is also testament to Cedeño’s success at carving out a political niche for herself through the creation of the office of the first lady, which has real clout.
