TRACKING TRENDS

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | Budget. The health ministry will receive US$220m, up 17%, in the US$11.34bn budget for 2012. The budget for public works, meanwhile, was raised by as much as 21% to nearly US$1bn. This includes funding for a second metro line in Santo Domingo. Spending on public works was always likely to be increased sharply in an electoral year. How efficiently it is spent is a moot point. The WEF placed the Dominican Republic in last place (142) in the world for wastefulness of government spending in its 2011-2012 Global Competitiveness Report (see sidebar).
