CHILE: Education confrontation nears crunch

After six months of student protests and a succession of fumbling government responses, some sort of solution to the issue of education reform seems to be emerging. Bizarrely, the unpopular political opposition in congress, the Concertación alliance, plus three other independent parties, have come up with a compromise which appears acceptable to the government, teachers and probably most of the moderate student protesters. As Camilo Vallejo, the communist president of the main student union, the Fech, is seeing some of her support drain away as she seeks as second presidential term, all the ingredients seem present for a resolution.
