ARGENTINA: “It isn’t Disneyland but it’s far from a crisis”
President Cristina Fernández sought to assuage fears about Argentina’s economy with these words. Fernández told Argentines that while the economy was not at its best it was far from collapsing, a fear that had been fuelled by the government’s recent economic announcements. At a different event a day later she said that “Some understand that competitiveness is reached by decreasing salaries or paying fewer taxes. Now we have to start fine-tuning and analyse inflation, subsidies and profits”. This was the first time in almost four years in power that Fernández mentioned inflation directly and recognised it as a problem that needs addressing, a move that was welcomed by traditional (and newly acquired) supporters and critics alike.
