MEXICO: Sonora presents another problem for Calderón
Sonora, a large but thinly populated northern border state, has played a disproportionate role in Mexican history and, worryingly for President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa, has presented his administration with two of its worst tragedies: one has already become a scandal (the death of 48 infants at the ABC nursery in the state capital, Hermosillo in June 2009). The second, which also bears the hallmarks of an incipient scandal, was the murder on 28 November, also in Hermosillo, of Nepomuceno Moreno Muñoz, a member of the human rights group Movimiento por la Paz con Justicia y Dignidad (MPJD).
