In the last week of November, 1,070 scholarship applicants who received financial backing from the Ecuadorean government of President Rafael Correa to study overseas were informed of the outcome of their applications. The programme, a first for Ecuador, which is officially known as the national superior education, science, technology and innovation secretariat (Senescyt)’s “open call 2011”, is intended to stimulate postgraduate studies (Master’s degrees, PHDs and postdoctoral research training) in several fields.
