Ecuador launches ambitious scholarship program

In the last week of November, 1,070 scholarship applicants who received financial backing from the Ecuadorean government of President Rafael Correa to study overseas were informed of the outcome of their applications. The programme, a first for Ecuador, which is officially known as the national superior education, science, technology and innovation secretariat (Senescyt)’s “open call 2011”, is intended to stimulate postgraduate studies (Master’s degrees, PHDs and postdoctoral research training) in several fields. These include the fields of: “sciences of life”, which comprises medicine-related fields as well as others related to living organisms, such as botany; “sciences of natural resources”, which includes both the study of extractive industries and of conservation-related fields; “sciences of production and innovation”, which ranges from agri-related fields to the automotive industry; and the more traditionally-defined “social sciences”.
