An existential crisis in Brazil’s Pará

Some 4.8m eligible residents of Brazil’s northernmost state, Pará (pop 7.5m), will vote in a plebiscite this Sunday (11 December) on the proposed division of the Amazon state into three: Pará, surrounding the capital Belém; Carajás, to the south; and Tapajós, to the north. Pará is currently run by its first female governor, Ana Julia Carepa of the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT).
