POLITICS: Peña Nieto comes unstuck

Enrique Peña Nieto, the front-runner for the Mexican presidency in next year’s elections, rashly chose Mexico’s main literary festival, at Guadalajara, (the Fería Internacional del Libro) on 2 December to portray himself as, if not an intellectual, at least someone with a mind of his own. He launched his book about the problems facing Mexico and their possible solutions (México, la gran esperanza. Un Estado Eficaz para una democracia de resultados) at Guadalajara.  To the delight of his rivals and Mexico City’s commentariat, Peña Nieto made a serious gaffe.
