What the slowdown means

The zero GDP growth figures for the third quarter were well trailed by the government which neatly avoided them becoming a challenge to its economic management credentials. President Dilma Rousseff insists that Brazil is ‘armoured’ against the continuing global turbulence and has encouraged Brazilians to “keep on producing and consuming”. Industry too took the figures in its stride. On 7 December the Brazilian motor industry reported that it had hired 29 more people in November than in October.
