The first six days of 2012 were comparatively peaceful. A mere 159 people, according to Reforma’s Ejecutómetro, were killed. If that weekly rate were to hold for the whole of 2012, the gang killing rate would drop to 9,699 compared with the 12,359 death toll of 2011. The comparative peace of the first five days of 2012 was wrecked by a horrible 24 hours which began on the evening of 8 January: in that 24-hour period 53 people were killed in 10 states.
