ENERGY: Is Ecuador sticking to the spirit of Yasuní?

On 11 January the Ecuadorean government announced that it would develop an oilfield which lies inside the 982,000 hectare Yasuní National Park which covers four big oilfields (Yasuní, Ishpingo, Tambococha and Tiputini, ITT) which hold 80% of Ecuador’s proven reserves  of crude oil. This is despite the government raising over US$100m from international donors to compensate it for not developing the oil under the Yasuní National Park.
