On 23 January Enrique Peña Nieto, the de facto Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) candidate for the presidency, admitted that he had two illegitimate children: one had died in infancy, the other was seven. One of his mistresses, Maritza Díaz Hernández, immediately tweeted that Peña Nieto had fathered her child but had never provided for him so how could he look after the country if he was elected president. Díaz Hernández claimed to have worked for Peña Nieto’s predecessor as governor of the Estado de México from 1999 to 2005.
