ARGENTINA: Water is worth more than gold

“What has been the governor’s biggest mistake?” a reporter for the national daily La Nación asked the owner of a delicatessen in the town of Famatina, La Rioja, this week; “Giving computers to the people,” came the response. The protests against open-pit gold mining that started in the otherwise quiet and remote Andean communities of Famatina and Chilecito have secured national media coverage and spilled over to more than half of Argentina’s provinces thanks to the social networking sites Twitter and Facebook. Residents have also used YouTube as a political historical ‘archive’, selecting excerpts from statements delivered by Governor Luis Beder Herrera, of the Frente para la Victoria (FPV) faction of the Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists), to highlight his apparent flip-flopping on the issue of mining.
