Chávez the Condor. On 29 February President Hugo Chávez sent four Tweets from his hospital bed in Havana, Cuba, declaring himself in recovery mode from his day-earlier operation to remove a potentially cancerous lesion from the same pelvic area afflicted by a large tumour last year. “A very good evening, my beloved compatriots! Here I go, taking flight like the Condor! I send you my supreme love! We will live and we will triumph!”. The minister of science and technology, Jorge Arreaza, later Tweeted that the president had held a telephone call with his vice-president, Elías Jaua, and the industry minister, Ricardo Menéndez, about the government scheme, Misión Saber y Trabajo (The Knowledge and Work Mission). The opposition blogger Nelson Bocaranda wrote yesterday that that the Brazilian medics on Chávez’s team were of the opinion that the president’s use of steroids, to give the appearance in public of health, may have accelerated the re-growth of his tumour. If the latest lesion proves malignant, the president will probably have to undergo a further course of radiotherapy.
