Piñera poised to seal deal to end protests

As we go to press the government of Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera is hopeful it will be able to strike an accord to end protests in the southern region of Aysén (Region XI). Both sides have levelled charges of intransigence at each other over the course of the last three weeks, but as soon as protesters agreed to clear away many of the roadblocks in the region, the government promised to resume talks “immediately”. The Aysén regional protest movement is insisting that the government make a firm commitment to address its 11 demands, covering issues related to the high cost of living, especially fuel costs, and poor public health facilities, or it will consider re-erecting the roadblocks.
