MEXICO: Pressure builds up
The pressure building up inside all three of the main parties, as each finalises its lists of congressional and senate candidates, may yet explode and reshape the final phase of the campaign which culminates in general elections on 1 July. The most public explosion so far has come from the left-wing Coalición Movimiento Progresista, which nominated Manuel Bartlett, a notorious (and not yet former) member of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) for a senate seat in Puebla, which he might well win. The most serious tensions, however, are probably inside the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN). The PAN has already split in Monterrey, the country’s business capital, and is now rowing in Mexico City. Although there is some jockeying inside the PRI, it is tame besides what is going on inside the PAN, which has traditionally presented a united front.
