Brazil | PR defects from the ruling coalition in congress. On 13 March Senator Blairo Maggi, the powerful agri magnate known as ‘the King of Soya’, announced that the Partido da República (PR) would move to oppose the government led by President Dilma Rousseff in the senate. In practice, the lower house PR bench may be obliged to do likewise. The PR has 10 senators, meaning that it could provide the opposition in the senate with sufficient signatures (27) to create parliamentary committees of enquiry (CPIs).
