There was more than a trace of irony when Peru’s President Ollanta Humala and Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa spoke of the brotherly ties that link the two countries when they met in the Peruvian town of Chiclayo earlier this month [WR-12-10]. Peru’s media erupted in indignation over the last few days when it emerged that Humala’s elder brother Antauro has been receiving special treatment in prison where he is serving a 19-year sentence for leading an armed revolt in Andahuaylas in 2005, raising questions about not just corruption in the prison system but also at a political level. Correa’s elder brother, Fabricio, meanwhile, told a regional paper that Ecuadoreans are “living in fear” and have been “cowed into silence”.
