This past fortnight has been one of the most violent of President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa’s sexenio which began on 1 December 2006. In the week to 9 March, 421 people were killed by gangsters, according to Reforma’s Ejecutómetro, and the pace does not seem to have slowed much this week. The body count has been particularly heavy in northern Mexico, especially the US border states of Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, but there was also an alarming upsurge in violence in Guadalajara, following the arrest of Erick Valencia Salazar, the head of the Nueva Generación gang, on 9 March.
