Peru | Mining crimes. From today (16 March), unauthorised mining in Peru becomes a criminal offence, punishable with a prison sentence. Previously, it was a misdemeanour. The change was made by a presidential decree (1102); the prospect of this change triggered the violent protests in the gold mining region of Madre de Dios over the past week. The government has also issued decrees criminalising the unlicensed use of chemicals, notably mercury and cyanide.
