COLOMBIA: Can’t please everyone

When it rains, it pours. For President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, although February was not a particularly wet month in the literal sense, it was a stormy one. The loss of his attorney general, the congressional debate over whether to include the legal privilege of the fuero militar in the proposed judicial reform and the regional debate on the legalisation of drugs have ensured that there is no respite from his regular confrontations with former President Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010). While the removal of the attorney general provided Uribe’s former collaborators with some breathing space, albeit in the short-term, the other two developments are likely to bring President Santos more sorrow than joy.
