Clegg and Timerman spar in Seoul. On 27 March the governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom (UK) had another verbal clash, this time at the Nuclear Security Summit held in Seoul, South Korea. Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman of Argentina said: “today I want to call the attention of this Summit to recent episodes of militarisation in said nuclear-free zone [the South Atlantic], according to which an extra-regional power sent a nuclear submarine to an area whose sovereignty is the subject of a dispute recognised by the United Nations and it [the UK] refuses to confirm whether with this action is introducing nuclear weapons to a nuclear-free zone”. The UK's Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, dismissed the claims as "baseless insinuations", adding that: "As I'm sure our colleague from Argentina knows, the United Kingdom ratified the protocols to the treaty in 1969 ... which guarantees a nuclear weapons-free zone covering Latin America and the Caribbean...We have respected those obligations since 1969 and we will continue to do so."
