GUATEMALA | Zetas expand, murders fall. Interior Minister Mauricio López Bonilla said on 9 March that the Mexican drug trafficking organisation (DTO) Los Zetas had become the largest criminal organisation in the country, having taken advantage of the capture by Guatemalan authorities of the leading local drug traffickers [SSR-11-07]. Over the last two years, he said, the authorities had captured 12 of the 15 most-wanted suspected traffickers, and Los Zetas had moved in to recruit the members of their disrupted gangs. Nowadays, he said, 'there is in Guatemala no cartel with greater influence than Los Zetas.’
