Still bullish

This is our third effort at forecasting what may happen in 2012. We are more confident than most other forecasters that 2012 will be a better year for the region than 2011. The prospects for the US-centred area that covers Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean are picking up thanks to further signs of an economic recovery in the US. We are also probably more optimistic than most about South America where China, rather than the US, is a bigger external factor. We remain bullish on Brazil, where we believe that GDP growth will be significantly faster in 2012 than it was in 2011. Last year Brazil’s GDP grew by a disappointing 2.7%. We remain increasingly optimistic on the region’s other big economy, Mexico, despite the presidential elections in July and the increase in violence in March. We do not, however, expect as Jim O’Neill from Goldman Sachs does, that Mexico will become the world’s seventh biggest economy by 2020. We’re writing this in mid March.
