New task force. On 31 March Guatemala’s defence minister, Ulises Anzueto, announced the creation of a new task force, Tecún Umún, to combat drugs on the Pacific Coast and the eastern department of San Marcos, which borders Mexico. The US will provide economic and technical support in the form of patrol vehicles, communications systems and other equipment. According to Anzueto, maritime routes are used for 67-70% of illicit drugs trafficked.
