Opposition rallies against prosecutor’s ratification. On 11 April members of the opposition in the senate began manoeuvring to ensure that Daniel Reposo, the candidate proposed by President Cristina Fernández to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Esteban Righi as
general prosecutor, does not get the two-thirds majority backing needed to be ratified in the post. The Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), some members of the Frente Amplio Progresista (FAP) and the Coalición Cívica (CC) have already stated they will vote against Reposo’s appointment; together they have 21 votes, but they need 25. The ruling Frente para la Victoria (FPV) has 33 votes, plus the likely support of another five senators who usually align themselves with the FPV. Nonetheless, 13 senators are yet to decide their position; amongst these are the seven members of the Peronismo Federal bloc. The vote, however, will not take place for (at least)
another month.
